Interação entre padrões de beleza, procedimentos estéticos e saúde mental: perspectiva em pacientes
Main Article Content
Abstract
The use of social media, particularly platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, has become a major source for the dissemination of information and standards, including content related to aesthetics and beauty. Individuals immersed in this environment often compare themselves to others or seek cosmetic procedures in an attempt to align their bodies and facial features with reference models promoted by these platforms and by society. Procedures such as facial fillers and body enhancement treatments have become increasingly common, reinforcing imposed beauty standards and potentially posing risks to psychological well-being by contributing to body dissatisfaction. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of social media on body image perception and mindset, particularly among women exposed to unrealistic beauty standards. The study aimed to identify how comparisons with idealized standards contribute to low self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, and the pursuit of cosmetic procedures. This research was conducted through a literature review using scientific articles selected from the PubMed database based on the keywords “beauty ideals,” “body dissatisfaction,” and “social media.” The findings demonstrated that frequent exposure to social media is associated with increased body dissatisfaction and a greater tendency to seek cosmetic procedures. We conclude that social media and the beauty standards imposed by society exert a significant influence on individuals’ mental health, contributing to the development of low self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, and other psychological issues.
