Abstract

Facial aging promotes progressive structural changes in the skin, muscles, and facial support tissues, contributing to the loss of elasticity, hydration, and facial volume, as well as to the appearance and deepening of nasolabial folds, popularly known as “smile lines”. These changes are related to the natural aging process and may also be influenced by genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. In this context, hyaluronic acid stands out as the main filler used in facial harmonization due to its biocompatibility, water retention capacity, safety, and high aesthetic effectiveness. This study aimed to analyze the use of hyaluronic acid in the treatment of nasolabial folds caused by facial aging, addressing anatomical aspects of the region, application techniques, material properties, benefits, limitations, and possible complications associated with the procedure. This is a systematic literature review carried out through the analysis of scientific articles published in national and international databases. The results demonstrated that hyaluronic acid filler is highly effective in restoring facial volume, improving skin hydration, promoting tissue support, and significantly softening nasolabial folds, providing natural results and high levels of aesthetic satisfaction among patients. In addition, the technique contributes to facial rejuvenation in a minimally invasive manner, with rapid recovery and immediate results. However, despite its benefits, the procedure requires in-depth anatomical knowledge, individualized assessment, and professional technical expertise, especially due to the vascular risks associated with the treated region, which may lead to complications such as edema, bruising, asymmetries, and, in more severe cases, tissue necrosis. It is concluded that hyaluronic acid filler represents a safe, effective, and widely used alternative for the treatment of nasolabial folds related to facial aging, provided that it is performed carefully, ethically, and individually, respecting the characteristics and needs of each patient.

Facial aging promotes progressive structural changes in the skin, muscles, and supporting tissues of the face, contributing to the loss of elasticity, hydration, and facial volume, as well as the appearance and deepening of the nasolabial folds, commonly known as “smile lines.” These changes are related to the natural aging process and may be influenced by genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. In this context, hyaluronic acid stands out as the main filler used in facial harmonization due to its biocompatibility, water-retention capacity, safety, and high aesthetic efficacy. The present study aimed to analyze the use of hyaluronic acid in the treatment of nasolabial folds resulting from facial aging, addressing anatomical aspects of the region, application techniques, material properties, benefits, limitations, and possible complications associated with the procedure. This study consists of a systematic literature review conducted through the analysis of scientific articles published in national and international databases. The results demonstrated that hyaluronic acid filler presents high efficacy in restoring facial volume, improving skin hydration, promoting tissue support, and significantly softening nasolabial folds, providing natural results and high levels of aesthetic satisfaction among patients. Furthermore, the technique contributes to facial rejuvenation in a minimally invasive manner, with rapid recovery and immediate results. However, despite its benefits, the procedure requires in-depth anatomical knowledge, individualized assessment, and technical expertise from the practitioner, especially due to the vascular risks associated with the treated region, which may lead to complications such as edema, hematomas, asymmetries, and, in more severe cases, tissue necrosis. It is concluded that hyaluronic acid filler represents a safe, effective, and widely used alternative for the treatment of nasolabial folds related to facial aging, provided that it is performed in a careful, ethical, and individualized manner, respecting the characteristics and needs of each patient.
