Abstract
ABSTRACT:
Introduction:
Lip filling with hyaluronic acid (LFHA) is one of the most common procedures in aesthetic practice. However, it is still prone to complications.
Objective:
This study aimed to analyze the possible complications resulting from LFHA.
Materials and methods:
Patients who had undergone the LFHA completed a questionnaire regarding the procedure, the pre- and post-completion periods, the complications, and the satisfaction with the service.
Results:
Among the 24 participants, the majority was cisgender women aged 31 years old or younger; all underwent LFHA for aesthetic reasons, most of them to add volume to their lips. Most were aware of the possibility of complications and reported having received anesthesia for the procedure. The main complications after LFHA were hematoma and edema, the appearance of nodules and herpes at the application site. Still, 37.5% reported feeling pain, redness or swelling after filling. Most participants received guidance before the procedure, the most common recommendations were: not consuming alcohol, hydration of the lips, oral use of dexamethasone and acyclovir. Post-procedure guidelines were common among participants, the main ones being: use of ice, not drinking alcohol, avoiding smoking, using unspecified ointment and ingesting one acyclovir tablet. Complications and intercurrences were frequent but resolved naturally in 75% of participants.
Conclusion:
It can be inferred that clear and adequate guidance to the patient may have contributed to the high rate of satisfaction among participants with LFHA. Most reported that the result was better than expected. The cost-benefit ratio was considered good by the participants and most of them would undergo the procedure again.
