Cosmetic and Aesthetic Treatments for Acne Vulgaris: A Literature Review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Acne vulgaris is a chronic and multifactorial dermatosis that occurs more frequently in adolescence. This literary review was proposed in order to address cosmetic and aesthetic treatments for acne vulgaris. For this, a bibliographical survey was carried out that included original articles and reviews. The descriptors used in the search in the MEDLINE (via Pubmed), BVS (Virtual Health Library) and SCIELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) databases were "acne vulgaris", "cosmetic treatment" and "aesthetic treatment". The search was limited to Portuguese, English and Spanish, covering the period from 2012 to 2022 and considering only articles with full text and free access. Several therapeutic options were available, which are related to the mechanism of the disease and the degree of severity. These include topical and oral antibiotics, combined oral contraceptives and antiandrogens, benzoyl peroxide, and phototherapy. It is noteworthy that new approaches have emerged such as IPL therapy (Intense Pulsed Light Therapy). In this context, treatment involves a multidisciplinary approach that considers different therapeutic options, taking into account the severity of the disease and the individual characteristics of the patient. The search for effective treatments that minimize inflammatory lesions, prevent scarring and hyperpigmentation, in addition to improving patients' self-esteem, is essential for the proper management of this common dermatological condition.
